2025 Scholarship Winners

The Jon Walther Memorial Teaching Scholarship honors Jon Walther, who spent most of his career teaching English at Downey High School and served as president of MTA. Its purpose is to encourage young people to follow in Mr. Walther’s footsteps and pursue careers in education.

The scholarship is awarded to students, one per high school, who wish to pursue teaching as their profession and who demonstrate excellence during their high school careers.

The Cecil Curfman Memorial Scholarship was established in recognition of Mr. Curfman’s service to the teaching profession. Cecil Curfman was a long-time social science teacher at La Loma Junior High, and a leader in both the California Teachers Association and the National Education Association.

The scholarship is awarded to the dependents of MTA members who demonstrate excellence during their high school careers.

The Frank Vandervort Memorial Scholarship honors Frank Vandervort, who served as Executive Director of the Modesto Teachers Association for 15 years after 8 years as President. Frank is remembered for his comprehensive knowledge of the contract, his tenacious representation of members, and his ability to secure grievance settlements.

This scholarship is awarded to a high school senior who is strong in academics and school activities, and whose parent has been active in MTA.
